This appeal is to pay for the hand-crafted Victorian tiles required to repair the Pacific Pool at Chester City Baths which was drained due to Covid-19, but caused damage to the floor of the pool.
Our task is to raise sufficient funds to pay for the Hand-crafted Replica Victorian Bath-tiles required to replace those damaged as a direct result of Covid-19, in order to re-open our Pacific Pool. Chester Swimming Association is the charity dedicated to maintaining the swimming facilities at Chester City Baths, a grade II listed-building. The charity took over the operation of the Atlantic and Pacific Pools from the council in 1977 to avoid their closure. The pandemic forced us to close and drain both pools, a procedure that had been previously undertaken without any problems, but water seepage caused damage to a large number of tiles in our Pacific Pool, thereby rendering it inoperable. Our Atlantic Pool is once again operating normally, but water-time at Chester City Baths has been halved, thus greatly reducing our income. Our utility bills and salaries remain high, so we must re-open the Pacific Pool as soon as possible so that we can return to profitability and remain open.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The major benefit of our project will be to re-open the Pacific Pool for our users, who include learn-to-swim, competitive swimmers, leisure swimmers, those who swim for health and exercise, water-polo players, sub-aqua divers and triathlon participants. Our users range from infants to pensioners across a wide cross-section of society. Children are taught to swim here, either by one of the many schools that visit the baths, or by coaches employed by the City of Chester Swimming Club. One of a dwindling number of historic swimming baths, the two pools at Chester City Baths have provided a safe, welcoming environment for swimmers since they were opened in 1901, and have been operated by our charity since 1977, but the re-opening of the Pacific Pool is essential to the survival of baths. The Pacific Pool is particularly suitable for our ‘Learn-to-Swim’ program that teaches children that essential skill that not only brings enjoyment and health benefits, but can also save lives.

The first batch of tiles has been paid for and delivered to the baths, and the remainder are currently being manufactured. These are not off-the-shelf items, so the process is taking some time. Work has already taken place to prepare the pool to receive the new tiles, so we expect to begin installing the new tiles soon. Many, many thanks for your contributions towards the reopening of the Pacific Pool at Chester City Baths.
We have placed an order for the tiles, and are currently awaiting delivery. This will complete the first stage of our mission to re-open the Pacific Pool. Many, many thanks to all who have contributed to the project so far. However, this is only the half-way stage on our journey; we will soon have the tiles, but now need to raise sufficient funds to pay for the professional preparation of the pool base, followed by the installation of the tiles. This has to be done by a specialist company, so please keep an eye open for our next Spacehive project.
Thankyou everyone who has contributed to our project to pay for the replacement tiles required to re-open the Pacific Pool at Chester City Baths. We have had pledges from companies, from named and anonymous individuals, the Marjory Boddy Trust, the Earl of Chester's Fund, Cheshire West and Chester Council and from the City of Chester Swimming Club. We can now purchase the tiles, but still need additional funds to cover the cost of labour. Again, thankyou. Chester Swimming Association.
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
