The idea
Our project aims to expand and enhance our dementia choir, a community initiative that uses the power of music to support people living with dementia which includes their families, carers and friends. What began as a small, supportive singing group has grown into a vital lifeline for many local residents. We now want to increase our reach, improve accessibility, and provide a broader range of musical and wellbeing opportunities that will enrich the lives of even more people affected by dementia in Southport.
Dementia can be isolating, disorientating and emotionally overwhelming, not only for those diagnosed, but also for their loved ones. Our choir offers a positive, uplifting space where people come together to sing and dance, and we also like to perform in the local community, Southport Flower show being one of our events to raise dementia awareness. We have 14 volunteers from my Southport Wellbeing Choir who come along and participate with our group and also serve refreshments

Why it's a great idea
Our Southport dementia choir is a warm, welcoming community where people living with dementia, come together to experience the joy, stimulation, and connection that music brings. As demand grows, we are expanding the choir so more people can benefit from the emotional, social, and cognitive support it provides.
Our free weekly sessions provide structure, routine and moments of shared happiness that have a lasting impact. The choir isn't just about singing and dancing its about belonging, support and giving people living with dementia a place where they feel safe and valued. Our participants carers and families play a crucial role in their dementia journey, as we find they lack emotional support. Lots of our members have met new friends and their carers and families have been able to chat to others who are facing the same challenges We organise a monthly social at The Bold Hotel in Southport, so everyone can come together, chat, sing and dance in another friendly and warm space.
