More about our impact
The environment
We have created a new wildlife friendly and biodiverse area of garden on a difficult site. Appropriate planting for the conditions has been chosen and will give interest to everyone passing by all year 'round.
The local economy
We sub-contracted some of the heavier work to a local contractor. The footfall HAS increased to the local cafe, and they in turn have a collection box to help us sustain the project. Visitor feedback direct to us re-iterates and vindicates our aims to encourage repeat visitors to our town, given the positive messages it gives about what our community can do for itself, thereby reflecting positively on how special the town is and why they should come back again.
Volunteering, jobs & education
This is now a new group of volunteers, which formed specifically to restore these beds. Only 1 person had volunteered on other Town Team managed sites before. Many of the crew had recently moved to our town and were looking to engage in community in a deeper, more meaningful and regular way to give back and meet new people. It has completely achieved that. Our information board gives key information about the nature of the plants and we have had several 'crocodiles' of schoolchildren come and visit and chat to the volunteers about the project.
Arts, culture & heritage
These beds were once part of a long standing, traditional municipal planting scheme which at the time represented Broadstairs' history and sense of civic pride to everyone. Long neglected, they are now back as feature and prominent green spaces and reflect positively and appropriately for 2022 and thereby enhance the crucial but evolving Heritage aspects of pride in our town for both residents and visitors.
Activity, health and leisure
'Green Exercise' is proven to have a positive impact on people's health and wellbeing. Working in groups for a collective goal fosters and builds new relationships and again helps people ( especially those who have just made significant moves, life changes or experienced ill heath or loss) feel a sense of ownership and pride in where they live. New friendships and the ensuing smaller social and friendship groups and gatherings that have come out of these new beds, along with shared knowledge and skills are a testament to the project and just a small idea growing into something of great benefit to many people.
