We would like an extra evening at our youth club and gain access to a hire bus so that we can go on more of site trips.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
We love our youth club so we would like to have another evening, we have a new building and think this makes it possible.Youth club gives us something to do after school with our friends, that keeps us safe and means we don't have to hang around on the estate. It's exciting because we learn new things like sewing and dancing and we play pool, table tennis and do arts and crafts. Having a bus would mean that we could go on trips more often to places like the seaside, indoor snowboarding and rock climbing, and allow our friends with disabilities to travel with us safely. It also means that we could take part in local sports tournaments because we would have transport.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
At the moment our youth club is run by local people and all of our volunteers live on the estate too. The people that run our club know what it's like to live on our estate and understand what it's like because of that. It's also really great that they have a job because of the youth club. Club is a brilliant place for the local residents too, in half term we had a lady from the estate who runs her own sewing business come in and teach us aĺl how to make cool bags and another local lady who does face painting came as well. Youth club teaches us about our environment and how we can use our recycling for arts and crafts to create different things. In the past we have worked with a shop on the estate called the Loop, they taught us how to design and paint plant pots to brighten up the little garden outside the community centre, and we would really like to do more things like this in the future, Quote from one of our members - "it was really fun!" lyilah 9 years old
Steps to get it done:
Grahame park is the largest social housing estate in Barnet and one of the most socially deprived. 90% of our youth club participants are registered for free school meals, at club we make it a priority to do cooking with our young people every week just to make sure that they are being fed healthy food and not going hungry. We know that childhood obesity is an issue in the UK and we make sure that the cooking we do with our young people promotes healthy living. We know that unfortunately not all of our young people will be going home to a hot meal so we make sure they get one at club. During our holiday programs we work with a Barnet based company know as Syrian Kitchen. They employ Syrian refugees to cook healthy meals for our young people to eat during the half terms and holiday clubs to ensure that they don't miss out on that free meal that they would usually get at school. This is another reason why our club is so important and why we are so desperate to run more days.
