Our research shows that a Lawn Tennis Club existed in Cirencester as far back as 1884,
Fast forward to the early 1920's and tennis had relocated to the Stratton area of Cirencester and was being played on hard courts
Sadly we are missing a whole chunk of information through the 1930's, the war years and up to and including the 1960's.
And so we arrive into the 1970's when tennis was played in the grounds of the Stratton House Hotel.
Many changes happened in the early 1980's and tennis facilities in the area were on the decline with tennis being played in St.Michael's Park and the Agricultural College.
By 1990 agreement had been reached with Lord Apsley and the Bathurst Estate to move to Cirencester Park adjacent to the Cricket Club which had played in the park for 150 years.
At the time of this move the tennis club had just 35 members
The following year an application was made to develop 6 hard courts financed through a variety of sources including the players themselves.
In 1992 the two tennis clubs were reunited with a combined membership of 137 players.
By the mid 1990's our existing "clubhouse" had been provided by Tewksbury Garden Centre and approval was gained to install floodlighting for the courts. Additionally water was installed as was a single Portaloo !
By 2003 Membership had topped 300 and with the benefit of lighting, club tennis and matches could be played on winter evenings. In 2012 the club was proud to be name Gloucestershire LTA's "Club of the year".
Since then further significant investment means we now have 7 excellent quality clay courts and LED floodlighting.
And now in 2024/2025 our attention has turned to a new Clubhouse project which when complete will really be the cherry on top of the cake for this fantastic club.
