My name is jackie Sewell and I Co founded Buy the Kilo with my eldest daughter Racael in 2019. Buy the Kilo is a Zero waste, plastic free shop. Rachael and I brought the concept of shopping plastic free to the North East. After having an interior design business in the area for over 30 years I graduated in Fine Art at Northumbria University in 2013 and my art works highlight the blight of plastic in our enviroment. The vision for a zero waste shopping place was born from this and the need to shop plastic free, saving your one use plastic items going to landfill by refilling and reusing. Since opening we have helped and advised over a dozen shops to open, sharing informtion and ideas. With this we have created a community of zero waste shops and a community of shoppers that are concious about the enviroment around them and how they live to make our planet a better place, however small their contribution, it is very important. At Buy the Kilo, we have created a wonderful community hub that people like to visit.
Our No Time For Waste Event will hopefully increase our community and tell people about enviromental issues that are happening in and around our area and the world. Since the beginning we have always supported enviromentally concious businesses individually and it will be great to bring them all together under one roof at the event.
We are very aware of many different community groups supporting enviromental issues and making positive changes. These will be the informative part of the event.
We have worked with many creative people since we opened. Our Buy the Kilo Gallery has had over 40 exhibitions with artists coming from all over the UK and Europe. Makers have had amazing workshops, sharing lost and important skills with our community. These will also be providing workshops and continuous craft for our visitors to the event.
