After running my Zerowaste plastic free shop in North Shields for nearly five years, I want to create a large event to enhance what we already do in the shop. Promoting everything Environmental.
in February next year I have have hired our local Community Centre, The Linskill Centre in North Shields for the Day. This day coordinates with the five year anniversary of opening our Zero Waste, Plastic free shop. Our shop promotes plastic free shopping, saving one use plastic items going to land fill. In our time opening, we have saved thousands pieces of plastic going to landfill. Our shop also addresses the issues of food waste, where people can buy what they need instead of being forced to buy what they buy at the supermarkets. Our day event is highlighting lots of different issues about the environment under one roof, making it an enjoyable free day out, from continuous environmental craft, talks, workshops, environmentally conscious businesses selling their products to information stalls about the environment. Since we opened we have not just created a wonderful shop but a huge community of people who are doing their bit to try and save the planet. Trying to get people to engage with this subject matter in recent and present times, has been a very difficult job, as people have different agenda's to worry about other than the environment. This is such an important issue and if I can provide a platform for people to come and enjoy this subject matter through many different avenues, I think it might be a success. Hopefully, by seeing what is going on in the area and the people that already engage in environmental issues may provoke some food for thought.
Steps to get it done:
From the beginning, our shop has always been about sharing information and promoting other businesses and artists in the area. we have a huge community of like minded people and have created such a lovely environment for people to enjoy, I want to share this with the masses and let people know about all of the interesting people we have on our doorstep, just trying to do their bit for the environment.

VolunteerMy name is jackie Sewell and I Co founded Buy the Kilo with my eldest daughter Racael in 2019. Buy the Kilo is a Zero waste, plastic free shop. Rachael and I brought the concept of shopping plastic free to the North East. After having an interior design business in the area for over 30 years I graduated in Fine Art at Northumbria University in 2013 and my art works highlight the blight of plastic in our enviroment. The vision for a zero waste shopping place was born from this and the need to shop plastic free, saving your one use plastic items going to landfill by refilling and reusing. Since opening we have helped and advised over a dozen shops to open, sharing informtion and ideas. With this we have created a community of zero waste shops and a community of shoppers that are concious about the enviroment around them and how they live to make our planet a better place, however small their contribution, it is very important. At Buy the Kilo, we have created a wonderful community hub that people like to visit.
Our No Time For Waste Event will hopefully increase our community and tell people about enviromental issues that are happening in and around our area and the world. Since the beginning we have always supported enviromentally concious businesses individually and it will be great to bring them all together under one roof at the event.
We are very aware of many different community groups supporting enviromental issues and making positive changes. These will be the informative part of the event.
We have worked with many creative people since we opened. Our Buy the Kilo Gallery has had over 40 exhibitions with artists coming from all over the UK and Europe. Makers have had amazing workshops, sharing lost and important skills with our community. These will also be providing workshops and continuous craft for our visitors to the event.
