Longfield Hill Community Hall Frontage

Having recently completed a successful internal refurbishment of the community hall, the hall users and local community now needs an exterior overhaul to provide safe access to the hall and parking.

The idea

The Longfield Hill Community Hall was built in 1949, the walls being made of concrete which has deteriorated such that moisture penetrates the walls and causes dampness internally. Having recently replaced the roof and interior ceiling we would like to apply a damp proofing primer, anti-crack mesh and silicone.

In addition, as the interior of the hall has been significantly improved we are finding that the hall usage is increasing. Three of the groups who use the hall weekly have members who are in a wheelchair or use walking aids. The current parking facilities are uneven and there is not an adequate path to give them, and others, safe access to the hall. The plan is to excavate and lay a path up to and around the building, to dig out and level the front and lay kerbstones and type one to facilitate safe parking and safer, level walking to the hall.

What we'll deliver

  • Damp proofed, re-painted exterior walls
  • Concrete path giving safe access to front and rear doors
  • Level, graveled safer parking and walking area

Why it's a great idea

The hall is currently used by four groups on a weekly basis, one of the groups being 1st New Barn Scouts & Guides and one being a ‘Welcome’ group where members of the community are invited to attend for friendship, activities, lunch, a sort of ‘warm space’ but was established prior to that term being used. Similarly there is an Art group and a free evangelical church which has been meeting there for 25+ years, as have the Scouts. The developments planned will make a significant positive difference to all of these users as it will give them safe and easier access to the hall.

The hall is also used by other members of the community for children’s parties, ad-hoc community meetings and the like. The project will certainly address the safety issues that currently arise when users endeavour to park and access the hall.

The improved aesthetics will also benefit those living in the vicinity of the hall, something which has already been highlighted by those living opposite the hall.

Steps to get it done

  • Damp proofing the walls
  • Excavating and laying a safe path
  • Levelling and providing safe parking and access

There are some local residents who are not able to safely access the current activities being held in the hall who would obviously be able to if this project is successful.
