More about our impact
The environment
Creating 180 Dementia Friends has raised a huge amount of awareness locally as to how we can adapt our environment to make life easier for people affected by Dementia and thier Carers. We also took the lead on a dementia friendly audit of Beach House Park where 30 people with dementia and thier carers came along and looked at ways green spaces could be made more accessible for people with hidden disabilities.
The local economy
Pop up dementia hubs were hosted in a variety of locations that brought awareness to the staff and general public. Using Dementia Friends as an education tool it offered buisness's and community spaces the opportunity to adapt their environment to be more dementia friendly. Working with Impulse Leisure and Home instead we supported them to set up a regular memory cafe twice a month.
Volunteering, jobs & education
By delivering Dementia Friends sessions in our community this has encouraged some people to go on and train to become Dementia Champions. These volunteers are now continuing to deliver Dementia Friend sessions across Worthing and Adur increasing awareness and engaging more potential volunteers. One of our objectives was to support Adur become a Dementia Friendly Community and during our joint event with Adur & Worthing Council, WSCC and CCG we saw lots of people get involved and volunteer on the day as well as pledge to volunteer ongoing.
Arts, culture & heritage
One of the great outcomes we had was to work with South Downs Leisure to deliver pottery sessions for people affected by dementia and thier carers. Some of the attendees at the sessions were people that we hadn't reached before. The Spacehive money enabled us to pay for an instructor and print leaflets. 10 couples benefitted from 2 sessions and the aim is to now look into future funding to sustain the activity.
Activity, health and leisure
By offering Dementia Friends sessions and free memory cafes at a local leisure centre we encouraged more people to enter the centres that wouldn't of normally. Offered carers of people with dementia the opportunity to use the facilities whilst the person affected by dementia used the memory cafes.
