Our aim is to provide a Public Access Defibrillator at the Spike Community Centre Guildford. It will be mounted on a wall in the Spike car park so it will be available 24/7 to anyone who needs it. We will register it with the ambulance service, so they can direct people to it and give them the code to unlock it.
The Defibrillator will be housed in a lockable weatherproof cabinet. The cabinet will be lit, so it can be easily found at night and a user can see the contents clearly, and will be heated to prevent condensation damaging the Defibrillator.
We also aim to buy a training device and other resources, including the British Heart Foundation's RevivR application, that will enable us to provide training courses to local residents in the use of the Defibrillator, and in CPR more generally.
What we'll deliver:
- An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), available 24/7
- A weatherproof lockable cabinet, internally lit and heated to prevent condensation
- Training courses for residents on CPR and the use of the AED
Why it's a great idea:
Defibrillators are crucial in cardiac emergencies and can increase survival rates by over 50%. Each minute without defibrillation decreases chances of survival by 7-10%. Modern defibrillators are user-friendly, aiding even untrained people in their application and CPR. The British Heart Foundation recommends a defibrillator should be possible to fetch within 4 minutes, 2 minutes each way, which is 200m walking briskly.
The area around Spike Community Centre is home to several hundred families. We are a diverse community that includes a significant older population. Currently we lack easy 24/7 access to a defibrillator, with the nearest one over 800m away.
The Spike, easily accessible by foot and car, serves as an ideal location for a defibrillator installation. The training courses will enhance CPR awareness and give confidence in defibrillator use.
Your support could save lives.
Steps to get it done:
- Select and purchase the defibrillator and associated equipment, including the training device
- Have a qualified electrician install an electrical supply for the cabinet
- Install the cabinet, connect it up and fit the defibrillator
- Hold a launch event to which local residents are invited
- Leaflet households in the area around the Spike to raise awareness of the defibrillator
- Hold training events and invite local residents to attend
Imagine this: a defibrillator installed at the Spike, ready to be the lifeline for someone in Charlotteville, St Luke's or nearby. Your contribution could make all the difference. Let's work together to ensure that help is readily available when it's needed most.
