The idea
ABRA Community Garden is a small green space which the community has been improving over the past 5 years or so. It serves the residents and nearby businesses of Arlingford and Brailsford Roads in Brixton, London SW2 - around 600 people, although it open to the general public too. It includes planting areas for vegetables, seating and open space for socialising.
We have no water supply and would like to have a tap installed so that we can water the garden.
We would also like to have decorative lighting installed in 2 mature trees in the garden, to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
WE would also like to be able to have a source of funding to but plants, compost, building materials, tools and equipment for the garden. We currently have no regular source of funding although we have been successful in the past in getting a small grant (£750) from the Hoopla festival in Brockwell Park.
What we'll deliver
- Install a water supply tap
- Provide attractive decorative lighting
- Provide plants, vegetables, tools and equipment
Why it's a great idea
Many of our residents do not have outside space of their own because they live in flats with no outside space. This has been particularly difficult during the Covid lockdown periods. The Community Garden provides a much needed semi-private space that residents can feel ownership of can participate in, including the planting of vegetables and herbs that can be used to supplement the weekly food shop.
The provision of a tap for watering the garden will help improve the space enormously and aid in the growing process.
The lighting improvements will help to make the space a more welcoming environment and encourage community socialising,
Steps to get it done
