To renovate the dilapidated terrace area around the cafe which forms the central hub for recreational and social interaction in Westminster Recreational Park for the benefit of all park users.
Westminster Park is a well-loved recreational park sitting in the centre of the Westminster Park, Lache and Curzon Park/Hough Green communities. With the support of Friends of Westminster Park (FoWP) volunteers, who meet weekly, the park is well maintained and has achieved Green Flag status. The cafe has now been renovated by the new tenants but the terrace which is outside of their lease remains dilapidated and poorly maintained. The revived cafe is a wonderful asset to our local communities and now we would like to renew and expand the terrace area around the cafe. Currently various groups including Chester Road Runners, walkers and MamaFit meet at the cafe but there is minimal space to sit outside. Our vision is to give the terrace a radical facelift including replacing the weedy and uneven flagstones with an attractive Breedon gravel surface, creating some raised flowerbeds and providing new seating on an extended terrace area with lovely views over the new mini golf course.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project will bring benefits to a broad range of users of Westminster Park. The cafe area will once again become a hub for the surrounding communities bringing significant health and well-being benefits. Creating an even and free-draining surface will be of benefit to all users but particularly the elderly, those with disabilities such as poor eyesight, wheelchair users and those with walking difficulties. People recognise the benefits of spending more time outdoors and the improved terrace area would provide the opportunity to have a drink and a bite to eat with friends and family in an attractive green space. The expanded terrace area will allow space for outdoor events, including summer festivals, bbqs, music events and craft fayres.
Steps to get it done:
Pollinating shrubs have been planted on the mini golf course with the help of the Friends of WP volunteers and the plan is to extend this theme onto the terrace. Incorporating lighting on the terrace will provide a safer environment for those attending evening events within the park.
