The Women’s Workshop is a unique, rurally based women’s organisation that takes a rights-based approach to promoting gender equality in Northumberland and beyond. Its aim is to offer learning, practical and emotional support, and creative projects that enable women to improve their chances of meeting their full potential, whether socially, economically, or emotionally. We use a collective and campaigning approach with women to tackle and speak out on issues that affect them.
We set out to amplify the voices of those who experience multiple forms of discrimination and exclusion, whose interests are at the heart of our practice.
Our base is a small wooden community space built entirely by local women, and this acts as a symbol for women breaking through stereotypes and trying something different.
We receive regular referrals from a range of organisations who respect our programme as providing a long-term support model for women they have supported on a short-term basis through a period of crisis. Regular referrals come from domestic abuse organisations, mental health agencies, social prescribing link workers, health visitors, Early Help staff, employability projects, disability support projects.
Our holistic approach means that each woman can expect to identify goals for herself and get help to tackle her barriers to achieving them. Our programme includes:
-
Mindful Mondays with a focus on mental health and well-being
-
Village based peer support groups building on the skills and strengths of women who get involved
-
Small group sessions and workshops using arts, crafts, drama, digital media, environmental and physical activities
-
‘Having a say’ projects and campaigns
-
One-to-one practical and emotional support including peer support from trained volunteers
-
Long term projects for gender equality including hosting Northumberland Women’s Network on behalf of Thriving Together Northumberland.
