Exhibition Week! A Huge Thank You + An Invitation7 months ago
1200-x-978-post-copy.jpg

We’re so excited to share that the Whittington Remembers Local History Exhibition opens this week at St John the Baptist Church — and you are all warmly invited. Over the past few months we’ve been working incredibly hard behind the scenes: researching the history of the Garden of Remembrance, gathering community stories, studying old maps and records, restoring photographs, designing boards, and bringing decades of local memory back into the light. It’s been a true labour of love, and we can’t wait for you to see it. 📅 Exhibition Dates Thu 27 Nov, 12–3pm Fri 28 Nov, 10–3pm Sat 29 Nov, 10–3pm 📍 St John the Baptist Church 💷 Free entry – all welcome Whether you enjoy local history, have family connections to the churchyard, or simply want to wander through the stories held in our village, we’d be thrilled to welcome you. 🧡 Please spread the word If you’re able to share the exhibition details with friends, neighbours, or local groups, it would mean the world to us. The more people who know the history of our village, the stronger our sense of place becomes. Thank you again for supporting this project - your encouragement has helped bring this exhibition to life. We’re so proud to be sharing Whittington’s history with the community, and we hope to see many of you this week. Warmly, Wend & Wild 🌱

First Milestone Complete — The Paths Are Done!8 months ago

We’re thrilled to share that the first stage of our Whittington Remembers project is complete - the gravel paths are finished! What a transformation it’s made. The paths now look beautifully cared for, with no more bare patches or muddy edges. It’s already changed the feel of the garden - tidier, lighter, and more welcoming - and we’ve had so many lovely, supportive comments from people passing through. We ended up using three bags of gravel instead of the one we originally budgeted for, as we took the opportunity to strip back some of the soil-heavy edges. It meant dipping slightly into our contingency, but it’s made a big difference: less weeding and maintenance in the long run, and a much cleaner finish. A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers for their tireless wheelbarrowing, raking, and sheer determination to see this job through. Your hard work has truly paid off - the paths look fantastic and the garden already feels more loved and looked after. Thank you also to TG Builders Merchants for their generous discounts. This might be just the first step, but it’s a big one - the first visible sign of progress and care in the Garden of Remembrance. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen, your support is already making a difference to how this special place looks and feels.

Project Update: Upcoming Events in October8 months ago

We’re delighted to share that our first storytelling event is now scheduled for Saturday 18th October — a Poetry and Creative Writing Workshop led by poet and creative guide Jennifer Medlicott. We’ll gather at Ye Olde Boote Inn for tea and conversation, wander through the Garden of Remembrance for inspiration, and then find our words together in the stillness of St John the Baptist Church. It will be a gentle morning of reflection, writing, and connection — and a beautiful way to begin sharing stories inspired by the garden. We’ll also be at Kitchen @ the Castle every Monday in October, 10am–12pm, for Stories from the Garden - an open invitation to drop in, enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake, and share your memories or reflections of the Garden of Remembrance. Come along, bring a friend, and join us in celebrating community, conversation, and the stories that live among us. 💚

Hooray! We did it!9 months ago

Well done everyone! What an amazing achievement - this was always going to be a bit tricky as a new organisation and yet the support has been so heart-warming that success felt inevitable. And here we are, so excited to where these next steps lead. There are two connected paths now to get the project completed before the end of 2025: 1. The practical improvements to the garden - that's putting down the gravel on the paths, taking up the weed suppression fabric and putting down the soil improver, and getting the benches organised. If we can get some plants in the ground that would be amazing, but we've had frost already so that might be a spring task. 2. The heritage aspect - gathering stories of the garden for the exhibition at the Church in November. There will be requests for stories going up around the village, and we are looking for stories of previous stewards and tenders of the space as part of the garden's stories. If you have some, do get in touch at [email protected]. Well done everyone and thank you so much for your support. Crowdfunding is a tricky business but the idea that when we come together as a group and all make a contribution, great things can be achieved.
