The idea
I want to deliver creative workshops to my local community and in particular to people who might struggle to feel motivated or to be social. My aim is to always keep the atmosphere friendly and relaxed, making sure that everyone can enjoy. We would use different art supplies and materials and in every session I will share ideas and tips , but also encourage participants to use their own ideas and creativity. I will introduce participants to the concept of art journal, a visual journal that can be used as a tool for creativity, self-expression and especially wellbeing, something I focus on in these sessions. I also suggest some basic relaxation and mindfulness techniques at the beginning of every class. The classes are aimed to encourage a regular creative practice that can be carried on independently even after the workshops are over. Whenever possible I like to offer nibbles/soft drinks during the sessions, and have some background music. I plan to find volounteers to help too.
What we'll deliver
- Help people to use creativity as a tool of wellbeing
- Introduce art journaling as a self-discovery and self-expression
- Offer an occasion for socialising in a friendly and encouraging environment
- Encourage the community to come together
- Encourage spontaneity in art and regular creative practice for all
- Share creative artistic techniques, tips and inspiration
- Enjoy the outdoors spaces within the local area
Why it's a great idea
My project is aimed to the wider community as a way to come together and enjoy the benefits of creativity for our mental wellbeing. Art journaling has been proven as an excellent tool to express emotions and highlight positive memories and feelings, encouraging each participant to find their own creative "voice". All my sessions support people's creativity and mental health, and being outdoor would be another benefit. Even tough we may not be together as a group due to the current pandemic, it is more important than ever that we stay creative and connected. I have been running workshops for few years now and the results have always been uplifting: sessions are pleasant and participants feel inspired. It is something that can be enjoyed at all ages and it is for every skill level. Creating art provides a distraction, giving our brain a break from our usual thoughts. Creating in a friendly group adds to the social part of the experience: it boosts drive, focus and concentration.
Steps to get it done
- Plan the workshops: think of themes, materials, activities
- Resource the materials needed
- Advertise the event in the local community
- Contact local associations that might be interested to inform them
- Distribute materials to participants
- Get permissions for public space sessions from the Council
- Organize additional items and providers: refreshments, music, extras.
- Finalize dates and times
- Set up space for the event
- Find volounteers to help with the practical aspects of the event
I want to especially encourage people who normally don't feel creative or feel like they can't make art. My aim is to show them that everyone can and should be creative and that we just need to start! We don' t need fancy art supplies either: there is a whole world of inspiration and art materials right inside the walls we live in! I am planning to provide participants with an "art kit" in order to provide additional art materials and inspiration, and of course an art journal to use for their projects. The activities will include: art "exercises" focussed on relaxation, mindfulness and wellbeing, drawing, sketching from real life, drawing/painting corners of our lovely local area, and overall a mix of different creative activities so that everyone is encouraged to explore, try new mediums, play, and find what they like the most. All activities are great for absolute beginners but also for more experienced artists. There will be volounteering opportunities for practical help.
