More about our impact
The environment
Whilst there were concerns prior to the installation that the fence might not be suitable for the local environment it is very unobtrusive and blends in naturally with the surroundings.
The local economy
With raising the money from donations from our generous backers we raised enough money to install the fence around the bowling green. Also with myself and two volunteers we have completed the installation without any labour costs. The local council in previous years had looked to fund this but having completed it ourselves we have saved them the cost of providing this.
Volunteering, jobs & education
The project has as we said has improved safety and security and future proofed the current facilities of the bowling club and wider community. With the project highlighting the park and the importance of the facilities there have been a Water Tower Gardens working party set up. They are looking into future uses for the park and also areas which of the park which volunteers can adopt and maintain. This group is made up of the following; Tower Fields Bowling club. Bridge Foyer which houses 16 - 21 year olds who are looking to gain new skills enabling them to find employment. Local Scout group. Local Church group. Each group will adopt an area to maintain and improve which will create lots of volunteering opportunities.
Arts, culture & heritage
The project will help protect and promote the tradition of crown green bowls for many generations to enjoy.
Activity, health and leisure
The bowling greens are currently closed for the Winter so when they reopen on March 27th we will be able to see an increased use in the fenced off green and the second green. We are holding an open day on 29th March between 12pm and 4pm for all the project backers, local councillors, local and wider community to come along and see the finished project and to promote the sport of crown green bowling. The second green will still be maintained for bowling and the council will be putting sign up for other activities it will be available to be used for. Activities that will not damage the surface which will be decided by the council. So far we have attracted 6 new bowlers for the upcoming season and hopefully will encourage more with the open day planned.
