Toxteth Community Radio (TCR) By Toxteth Community Radio (TCR)

Re Build a community radio station for Toxteth, (TCR) that has a legacy spanning over 30 years, as a way to engage all members of the community providing information, education and entertainment.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

TCR station was originally set up in 1988 by DJ's from Toxteth in Liverpool who brought vibrant music to the airwaves sourced from the American bases and other national and international DJ's. Over time the station transpired into a musical, social, political platform and a training ground for young people to develop media skills across the board. The station was resurrected online in March 2020 during the lockdown period as a way to boost community spirits and provide key information to those in isolation. There has been a lot of positive feedback via our social media and we have developed a partnership with the Unity Youth Centre where we have engaged with the young people online to create shows and are currently planning workshops. This platform, now more than ever, is required as a hub with an objective of bringing opportunity and benefit to local people. We would like to obtain funding for a licence, room hire, equipment, and to provide paid work opportunities.

What we'll deliver:

  • A community broadcast service
  • Workshops for the community
  • Advertisement & support for local business'
  • A platform for local artists
  • An audio recording facility

Why it's a great idea:

TCR will provide a platform for all members of the local community to receive information, education and entertainment. During the lockdown period we have curated shows for the children who where out of school and discussed the environment, bee's, trees, air pollution and solutions as well as fun music and story time. We promoted local organisations who where assisting with Covid relief. We have been playing music by local artists and mix's by local DJ's We have engaged with older members of the community by playing classic recordings and music from the early days of TCR, we have taken requests and shout outs via Facebook, this was very well received and provided comfort through nostalgia of happy memories during times of crisis. We are currently engaging local people and business' and providing opportunities to advertise their services and connect with the wider community, as well as engaging with creatives and providing a platform to create and share unique content.

Steps to get it done:

  • Securing a Radio Licence.
  • Acquiring Public Liability Insurance.
  • Acquiring Studio Equipment
  • Establishing an official board.

TCR has a great legacy within the ethnic minority community in Liverpool enabling music from across the world to be streamed into the homes of thousands of people across merseyside before the internet made it accessible. For this reason many people have great memories of TCR and the return is welcomed heavily by the local community. We have also received support from the Lord Mayor of Liverpool who has expressed that TCR Inspired her to enter in to politics by invoking insightful political debate. We wish to re-instate this platform for the community as a way of expression and a form of communication for those in the community without a voice. We have began to do this with a radio project called New Ways New Doors where active pioneering members of the community have discussed their projects and provided words of inspiration and advice. We have also partnered with The Unity Youth Centre engaging the young people in debates and discussions and are planning future workshops.
