The Gap Community Café is based in the centre of town, with a bus stop outside serving the deprived community of Thanet. The dedicated team of volunteers include many with special educational needs and those recovering from addiction and long term mental health conditions as well as those who have spent long periods out of work and education. We serve low cost healthy meals for people of all ages and our community payback scheme as well as other gifts and donations enable us to give free meals and food parcels to people dealing with crisis. People who are homeless and insecurely housed come in for a meal after the Café is closed two afternoons a week. There is a youth café one evening a week supporting those with mental health issues and those excluded from school. Other groups meeting in the Café include the elderly, many dealing with loneliness and isolation and a well-being group. The Café is a warm and welcoming place for all!

What we'll deliver:

  • Community Café

Why it's a great idea:

The Café is a safe and friendly hub of a wider community project. The space is airy and bright; the decor is modern and comfortable. The Manager and volunteers are friendly and welcoming. People living alone feel confident to come in and the meals are freshly made, healthy and cheap. The volunteers are nurtured and supported and encouraged to go on to find work and/or be part of other groups and activities within the project. We provide training and supervision and take a keen interest in their development and well-being. Providing fun social activities and trips.

Steps to get it done:
