THE UNICORN AND JOE

We want to present our magical new family musical - THE UNICORN AND JOE - as part of the Arcola Theatre's outdoor festival in summer 2021. We also plan to stage the show in a Hackney street market.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The idea

We're partnering with the Arcola Theatre as part of their upcoming 'Arcola Outside' initiative to bring shows outdoors. THE UNICORN AND JOE is a family musical, based on the much-loved book and film, 'A Kid For Two Farthings'. The story is actually set in and around a London street market. Following its premiere at the Arcola's new outdoor venue, we plan to stage the musical in an actual Hackney street market.
We'll invite participation from local community choirs, retirement facilities and youth groups, especially those catering for young people outside formal education. They would participate alongside a core professional cast, stage crew, musical director and director. And we'll work with the market management to involve stall-holders where possible. We'll also liaise closely with the council authorities and other organisations.
The entire process - from putting the show together to the final result - will be captured on video.

What we'll deliver

  • We will create a new family musical for the Arcola Outside theatre venue
  • We will work to the very highest professional standard
  • We will stage a musical in a street market or other outdoor space
  • We will help to upskill local community participants

Why it's a great idea

We'll bring a little bit of magic to the market!
Staging a show outdoors will attract new audiences, including people who might not normally visit a theatre building.
We'll create employment for professional performers and musicians.
We'll involve local community groups, giving them a chance to participate in a memorable project.
Staging a musical in a street market will help to animate a public space.
The musical will enhance awareness of the market beyond the local community, increasing footfall and boosting local businesses.

Steps to get it done

  • Developing the musical, working with writers, composers and directors
  • Liaising with the Arcola Outside festival on logistics
  • Premiering the musical in the new Arcola Outside venue attached to the theatre
  • Securing permissions to perform the show in a street market or other outdoor space
  • Working closely with local community groups, volunteers and organisations
  • Workshopping and rehearsing the show and including local community groups

We will continue to be steered by government safety regulations with regards to public gatherings and are aware that this performance may need to be rescheduled. In the event of any changes, we will keep you informed via updates on this project page.
