The idea
The Subs is in critical need of a new boiler to ensure the smooth operation of our cherished venue. The Subs has over 100,000 visitors a year. and is central to Subs' community and civic life.
Serving around 1,000 square metres of building space, including our two vibrant café/bars, bustling box office, admin office, the George Room, essential toilets, and our iconic ballroom—the heart of performances and events—the boiler has been fundamental to our daily functions.
Since the Charitable Trust took over in 2019, around £ 10,000 has been spent on patchwork solutions to prolong its life. Yet, the current boiler is on borrowed time, and its inevitable failure threatens to halt all activities, leaving the community without access to this vital space.
Furthermore, a new boiler system will increase our energy efficiency, reduce our bills and our environmental footprint.
Help us replace it before winter comes so that we can safeguard the continued running of The Subs.
What we'll deliver
- Installation of a boiler/heating and hot water system
Why it's a great idea
The Sub Rooms has over 100,000 visitors a year. It is central to Stroud's community life.
Without a boiler the following activities will be disrupted:
- a creative programme of music, comedy and gigs with up to 500 people at a time.
- daytime activities including exhibitions and afternoon film screenings
- school visits, workshops and work experience for students including those with disabilities or receiving learning support
- essential services such as a weekly mobile banking hub, support for those with sight loss and employment support
- a warm and welcoming cafe where people can meet, including a space for youth mentoring services and community group gatherings.
The Subs is a space for people of all ages and abilities and we pay particular attention to the needs of our more vulnerable community members.
We pride ourselves on being here for everyone, improving wellbeing, health, reducing social isolation, and bringing our community together through joyful, shared experiences.
