The idea
The idea of the Soup Kitchen was planted when one of our founders helped to serve Christmas dinner In 2018 at a local church and realised that we had a problem with homelessness and hunger in our city. In July 2019 we served our first meals, free of charge, from a mobile unit ..however it soon became apparent that we needed permanent premises, and these we’ve now found.
138 High Street West in Sunderland, is ideally situated, being within easy reach of the town and one of the most socially deprived areas. Having remained closed for some time we need to completely refurbish the premises. This will include new flooring, electrical rewiring, installing a commercial kitchen, with extraction and fire safety equipment and creating a friendly environment for our users. This is already funded, but we need support to purchase commercial cooking equipment.
To be called “Albert’s Place” we want to create the feeling of a “takeaway”, as quite often young children accompany their parent/s
What we'll deliver
- A free of charge feeding station for those in need
Why it's a great idea
Homelessness and hunger is often seen as a singular problem affecting a few individuals. Our project set out to tackle the problem of hunger on all it’s forms. We soon realised that there exists a much deeper rooted problem “Food Poverty”. Families whose income is insufficient to provide healthy and nutritious food for themselves.
Albert’s Place will provide a healthy balanced three course meal to those who need it.
Steps to get it done
- Continued and Improved provision of hot food to those in need
