This morning, we had the joy of visiting a local village school to introduce a class to the colourful art of God’s Eye mandala weaving—also known as stick weaving. Using simple materials and a lot of imagination, each child explored their own creativity through colour, texture, and pattern. Some chose bold, contrasting colours; others opted for gentle tonal shifts or mixed in unexpected textiles. Every child worked within a specific shop colour palette, and yet no two mandalas were alike—each one a unique reflection of its maker. The classroom buzzed with focus and pride as the woven designs took shape. It was a wonderful example of how traditional crafts can spark individual expression and bring a group together in shared making. We’re so proud of what they achieved—and we hope it inspires others to pick up some yarn and have a go! All achievable through your donations. Thank you !
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
Thought we would have a little creative time with the children weaving yarn around crisscrossed sticks that have been joined in the center. These are called "God's eyes". "God's eye mandala," also known as an "Ojo de Dios," is a traditional craft from the Huichol people of Mexico, woven on crisscrossed sticks and believed to protect and bring good fortune . Symbolism: The center of the eye symbolises the power of seeing and understanding things we normally cannot see. The ends of the sticks represent the basic elements (earth, water, wind, and fire) and the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west).
People make places great. We all have a stake in the towns, villages and communities of Kirklees.
