Spectrum SHOP 100, a Yarn Bomb of Slaithwaite’s centenary shops by the Fibre Tribe@The Watershed. 2025 marks 100 years of the Carr Lane shopping parade in Slaithwaite, with the anniversary being marked by a year-long heritage project looking into its history and shopping in the village. After the success of the Fibre Tribe’s ‘Wherever I Lay my Hat' project for WOVEN 2023, we are creating displays of woolly mandalas in an array of colour palettes to enhance each shop in June. As well as being super pretty and decorative, the act of creating mandala’s is a relaxing meditative process, something to ease the mind. We will be involving local school children and inviting our local crafting community to knit, crochet and weave mandalas to donate, with patterns and workshops available for all levels of experience. Designer Sandra Nesbitt is supporting the project with pattern advise and more information on her website.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project offers a wonderful blend of creativity, community, and mindfulness. By creating vibrant woolly mandalas, we transform local shops into inviting, artful spaces that enhance their aesthetic appeal and create memorable experiences for visitors. The meditative process of knitting, crocheting, and weaving these designs not only results in stunning, decorative pieces but also provides a calming, stress-relieving activity for participants. Involving local school children and our crafting community promotes intergenerational connections and skill sharing, making art accessible to all experience levels. With designer Sandra Nesbitt’s expert pattern advice and support, the project celebrates local talent too..

Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
Thought we would have a little creative time with the children weaving yarn around crisscrossed sticks that have been joined in the center. These are called "God's eyes". "God's eye mandala," also known as an "Ojo de Dios," is a traditional craft from the Huichol people of Mexico, woven on crisscrossed sticks and believed to protect and bring good fortune . Symbolism: The center of the eye symbolises the power of seeing and understanding things we normally cannot see. The ends of the sticks represent the basic elements (earth, water, wind, and fire) and the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west).
People make places great. We all have a stake in the towns, villages and communities of Kirklees.
