The local economy

The project when complete is part of a bigger vision to improve the appearance of Southwick Green and hopefully encourage more Sunderland residents to visit the area and shop in Southwick.

Volunteering, jobs & education

The project will educate the people of Southwick and visitors regarding the history and heritage of Southwick-on-Wear, and create an awareness of the great people who have lived in Southwick and contributed to its development and economy.

Arts, culture & heritage

The historical interpretation panel which has been the product of the crowdfunding project will create an awareness of the ancient village's heritage and our lost industrial heritage.

Activity, health and leisure

Many elderly residents will be motivated to take exercise to visit the interpretation panel on Southwick Green which is the focal point of Southwick.

Southwick Village Green Preservation Society was formed in May 2019 as a Facebook group for like-minded Suddickers whose heart is in Southwick and would be interested to preserve and improve Southwick Village Green. The village green is the site of the early medieval Saxon settlement. We are proud to boast that Southwick has a long and rich history. Over the last 30 years or so, however, the local economy has been seriously damaged by the collapse of Wearside industries, and it has had a profound effect on The Green area. Southwick Green has been a hive of activity for business and commerce for generations of Suddickers. Further, the increased use of online shopping and supermarkets have exacerbated Southwick Green's decline and have taken over in popularity from the many small shops that thrived on The Green and along Southwick Road. There is a strong feeling in Southwick that this decline needs to be addressed and for this reason, Southwick Village Green Preservation Society has been created to provide a stepping stone to move forward and apply for funding to invest in Southwick Village Green and the surrounding buildings. Over the past two years, our Committee has worked hard to improve Southwick Green. We have been involved in litter picks organised by Southwick Councillors and we have planted flowers and bulbs near to the War Memorial organised by SARA - Southwick Altogether Raising Aspirations. SVGPS has also compiled a heritage trail that didn't exist before and it has been added to the City's online heritage trail list. Our Society has also installed four heritage blue plaques in Southwick. Two were Community Chest Grant funded and two were funded by private subscription. Southwick Village Green Preservation Society has 12 enthusiastic committee members, a chairperson, secretary and treasurer. Recently we passed the milestone of 1,400 Facebook members who are intersted to support us to achieve more success.
