We are working in partnership with Sunderland City Council to obtain planning permission for this project. No pledges will be collected until planning permission has been granted.
The interpretation panel will be informative and attractive. The panel will describe and illustrate Southwick-on-Wear's rich and colourful history, industrial heritage, and notable people. The timeline will take us through the Bronze Age, the Roman period, the Norman Conquest, medieval Southwick, and the Industrial Revolution. The Victorian period saw a population explosion when the tiny agricultural hamlet grew into a small town. In the wake of the township's industrial success story there emerged some outstanding people and some of them are included in the panel.
What we'll deliver:
- The completed project will make an eye-catching addition to Southwick Green. The impressive structure is 7ft 6ins high.
- The panel containing the informative illustrations and text will be 4ft by 3ft.
Why it's a great idea:
As well as being an attractive structure the interpretation panel will create an awareness within the community and to visitors, of Southwick's history. The information recorded in the graphics is particularly targeted to new generations of Southwick people. Southwick schoolchildren visit The Green and teachers could have another site to visit and educate the children in their care.
Steps to get it done:
- Meet with SVGPS Committee to agree with what illustrations will go on the panel.
