The idea
Our ultimate aim is to use this neglected allotment and bring it back to life with Service Veterans and local Students to make it a real community allotment.
All Military Service Veterans have taken an oath to The Queen, this forms the link with our Jubilee Allotment. our aim is that the allotment is for Military Service Veterans alone, we intend to use the land to grow plants but also have a cabin where Veterans can meet and socialise with others. Using groups we work with possibly hold courses, do charitable work including off site gardening,we intend to launch the allotment with a Jubilee party, the students from the adjoining school joining us and catering for our guests albeit it we supply the materials for the Jubilee food and the students make it.
What we'll deliver
- a fully working community allotment
- a cabin where Veterans can meet other Veterans
- a group who will eventually undertake gardening in the community
Why it's a great idea
We have recently completed a day of Falklands War Remembrance Activities in memory of the 255 men who lost their lives during the war. On the evening we had presentations by 2 men both ex Royal Navy, both have struggled with PTSD. One presentation went on to say that more Falklands Veterans have taken their own life since the end of the war than died in the war. This is tragic, PTSD is very real and no amount of "pull yourself together man" will help. It has now been proven that working outside, on an allotment and with like minded people can and does help. if our Jubilee Allotment saves one life of a Veteran who has served Her Majesty we believe it will have been a success.
Steps to get it done
- Our first milestone is to remove all of the build up of rubbish through neglect and clean and tidy the area.
