Hi Everyone! Please have a look at one of our bike shelters that has just been completed. The winter rainfall has delayed us as the ground was too soft but now construction is underway. Once construction is complete, we are planning a "GRAND OPENING" and will keep you updated.

Big Pedal Bike and Scooter Days come to Seymour Primary7 years ago
warm-up-2.jpg

Seymour Primary in Crawley is in their first year of taking part in the Big Pedal. Participation in this year’s Big Pedal comes after Seymour Primary has run a variety of bicycle and scooter activities throughout the autumn and spring term. These activities include bike skills clubs, a high visibility competition including a slap band design and also lucky prize draw for the children who cycle to school. These activities are linked to empowering children to make active and sustainable journeys to school and reap the associated benefits such as increased physical activity, decreased air pollution and traffic congestion. Seymour Primary embraced the Big Pedal 2019 and put on two bike days. These bike days are designed to offer an opportunity to every child from year three to year six to get out on the playground with their bike or scooter and have a go at improving their skills. The sessions began with a bicycle or scooter safety check. The lesson then progressed with a warm up cycle across the playground. After this, the pupils had to stretch their skills through various exercises. Finally the lesson culminated in an opportunity for children to use their freshly learnt abilities on the obstacle course. This included the slalom cones, the brake box, the lava bridge and the bean bag toss. Various skills learnt included cornering, braking, anticipation and group cycling. On 27 March 2019 a staggering 104 bicycles and 47 scooters were counted at Seymour Primary. Bicycles and scooters lined the fences and where flowing out of the storage area. Bike it Pat, the local Sustrans Schools Project officer had never counted so many bikes at a school! On this day Seymour Primary quickly took the lead in the Big Pedal scores in West Sussex. This successful drive towards encouraging so many children to cycle and scoot to school coincides with Seymour Primary’s campaign to raise funds for two covered bicycle shelters which will further encourage the growing numbers of children actively arriving at school. Every donation will help provide better infrastructure for added sustainable and active journeys to school.
