More about our impact
The environment
While the primary aim of our sensory room was to support individuals with Down syndrome, we made sure to take steps to ensure the project was environmentally responsible. For example, by installing a high-quality facility within our own hub, we have helped reduce the need for members to travel to access similar services elsewhere, helping to lower our overall carbon footprint.
Volunteering, jobs & education
Since installing the sensory room it has not only supported the cognitive, sensory, and emotional development of our members with Down syndrome, but it has also created valuable opportunities for the wider community. It has provided hands-on volunteering opportunities to a handful of individuals, ranging from local students to retirees. These volunteers have developed new skills and gained insight into working with individuals with Down syndrome. The sensory room has become a hub for community engagement, attracting people from all walks of life who want to contribute to a meaningful cause while developing their own knowledge and experience.
Activity, health and leisure
The installation of the sensory room has significantly enhanced opportunities for physical activity, emotional wellbeing, and meaningful leisure for our members. The sensory room provides a safe and stimulating space where individuals with Down syndrome can explore, move, and engage with sensory equipment designed to support both relaxation and active play. Features such as the bubble tubes, tactile wall panels, and UV light curtain encourage movement, coordination, and interaction, helping to improve motor skills and reduce anxiety. The calming nature of the room also supports mental health by offering a quiet, regulated space for self-soothing and emotional expression. The sensory room has become a key part of our approach to promoting healthy, active, and enjoyable lifestyles for all our members.
