Renovate West Street Gym Club Gorseinon
After lockdown the community gymnastics club needs a lot of refurbishment. We have a leaking roof, peeling walls and poor heating and insulation but at the moment the leaking roof is a priority.
About the Project Creator
West Street Gymnastics Club is a not-for-profit organisation that has been around for over 40 year providing gymnastics for the local community around Gorseinon. They run classes all the way from mothers and babies through to toddlers, primary children up to teenagers.
Along with general classes it has also produced gymnasts who have competed for Wales and Great Britain a major achievement for such a small club. West Street definitely punches above its weight in the gymnastics world. As competition restarts after the pandemic it was great to see West Street bring home a huge haul of medals from a recent competition in Bristol.
All the coaches have come through the ranks of the club and the vast majority are volunteers. This method of operation has allowed local children not only to gain gymnastics skills but also to gain experience of working in teams and gaining leadership skills as well as coaching qualifications. During the pandemic it was refreshing to see the young coaches take the initiative and move classes online. The ever-supportive parents kept paying fees which ensured the continuation of the club.
Throughout the years the club has been supported by the parents and families of gymnasts. It has an active committee who support fund raising and general day to day issues.
Around 30 years ago, after a lot of parental support the club were able to purchase the building where they operate from. The building is a great asset as it provides a purpose designed space for gymnasts but it needs continual maintenance and upkeep to remain safe and secure for the gymnasts. Like the painting of the Forth Bridge the maintenance and upkeep issues never end.
West Street has always tried to keep its fees at a realistic level to allow as many of the local children as possible the opportunity of attending classes and therefore it has always fallen on parents and supporters to raise money to help to maintain the building.
Due to lockdown many opportunities for fundraising have been missed. As the building stood empty for a while a number of issues have arisen that need repair and maintenance. The most important job that needs tackling at the moment is repairs to the roof part of which has developed leaks. The club also needs to improve its energy efficiency along with many general maintenance and upkeep jobs.
