By West Street Gymnastics Club
After lockdown the community gymnastics club needs a lot of refurbishment. We have a leaking roof, peeling walls and poor heating and insulation but at the moment the leaking roof is a priority.
West Street Gym have always had a regular program of maintenance mostly covered by volunteers. When we have big projects, we need to galvanise our members and the local community into helping us out. We have a big membership all drawn from the local community and it is essential that the gym is dry and warm for our classes which range from baby groups to international gymnasts. At the moment a section of the roof has leaks and needs mopping and drying before classes can start. The volunteer coaches and helpers have to place receptacles around to catch water and ensure damp areas are thoroughly dry before they can be used. With the emphasis in schools and throughout society on having a healthy lifestyle, and exercise being at the forefront of this, we really need to ensure this facility valued by so many in the locality, including local schools, is kept in good repair. A leak free roof is essential.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
It is essential that our members have a dry warm environment. Club members range from babies and mother groups, toddlers, young children, teenagers and youths. The club also provides gymnastics classes for local schools who walk to the venue. As a not-for-profit organisation that has been operating for over 40 years it provides not only a place for a wide range of young people to enjoy sport but it has also produced gymnasts of an international standard with many of the local gymnasts competing for Wales and even Great Britain. During school holidays West Street provides inexpensive summer camps. Always well attended, these provide a range of activities as well as gymnastics and is a valuable asset for working parents. West Street Gymnastics Club is embedded thoroughly into the local community providing sporting opportunities to a wide range of children of all ages and abilities. The benefits of repairing the roof means that the gym would be able to continue.
Steps to get it done:
West Street encourages youth members to become volunteer coaches and all present coaches are either past gymnasts or their parents. The club provides local schools with work placement opportunities. Parents are encouraged to participate and volunteer for the huge range of tasks required to keep the facility open and running. The club runs competitions which attract visitors from all over Britain. This brings much needed trade to the hotel and catering businesses in the area. During school holidays the club runs a wide range of inexpensive kids clubs which not only provides great activities for children but also is a help for working parents who are looking for affordable childcare.
