Remembering Spilsby Union Workhouse

St Marys Church Hundleby PCC By St Marys Church Hundleby PCC

We would like to put up an interpretation board by a well used footpath close to where hundreds of workhouse inmates lie in unmarked graves. This will help us think of our community and impact.

Back this project!

We hope to install an interpretation board which would be accessible from the popular public footpath through the churchyard. It would tell people about the Spilsby Union workhouse that was located in Hundleby. Hundreds of people from the workhouse were buried in the churchyard, although there are no memorials to mark their graves. We want people to have pride of place. We also want to include information about the importance of churchyards for wildlife and produce a leaflet with additional information that will be available from the church porch open 10-4 everyday.

What we'll deliver:

  • Install a beautiful wooden framed pedestal interpretation board.
  • Produce informative colour leaflets about the Workhouse.

Why it's a great idea:

We will raise awareness of the Spilsby Union workhouse which was located in the village of Hundleby but served a large area. The site is now a housing development. We hope that the people from the workhouse will not be forgotten. We will encourage people to think about churchyards as important wildlife areas.

Steps to get it done:

  • Obtain permissions
  • Design the interpretation board
  • Write an information leaflet
  • Install the interpretation board
