We want to transform the currently disused Wood Lane Quarry into a versatile outdoor space that can be used for children's play, exploration and learning, community group hire, storytelling, natural sciences, outdoor education, well-being and more. The quarry has a small amphitheatre and we and we will bring this back to life with storytelling, drama workshops, recitals and plays.
We need to raise £16,000 to commission essential work to the tree line around the quarry, fund a rock face survey and any subsequent work, install a compostable toilet with solar lighting and build shelters.
Play Wild C.I.C. is a not for profit organisation providing outdoor play and education services in North Somerset running sessions for families, community groups, early years settings and schools. We've been given the opportunity to lease the quarry in Weston-super-Mare but we need your help to make this happen!
Just £5 will go a long way in creating this unique community space!
What we'll deliver:
- Commission a rock face survey
- Commission essential tree work
- Re-open the quarry for community use/hire
- Renovate the outdoor theatre for use by local drama groups and workshops
- A safe and unique outdoor space for the community to enjoy
- An eco toilet and shed
Why it's a great idea:
By re-opening this site we can give children the opportunity to explore nature and learn about sustainablility and environmental issues in a safe environment. We would love for youth groups to be able to use this site again and enjoy the outdoors and connect with nature. The benefits of outdoor play and being in the natural environment are becoming widely documented and have a huge positive impact on wellbeing and mental health as well as being proven to support children's academic learning and holistic development. By using the quarry to promote learning and playing in the outdoors to adults and children alike we hope to support the local community to be engaged in their environment and learn the information and skills required to implement positive environmental change in the future.
We also feel that the quarry is a unique and intimate venue for storytelling and drama and would like the community to benefit from this exceptional resource.
Steps to get it done:
- Commission a rock face survey
- Complete works identified in rock face survey
- Commission tree work identified
- Recruit community volunteers to clear scrub and build temporary structures
- Open Day to show the community the new site and resources available.
