The idea

The project involves the enhancement of Pynners Field sports ground and open space by establishing a wetland ecosystem adjacent to the South Circular on Dulwich Common A205.
Open to the public, the site benefits schools and clubs across Southwark.

Following the excavation of a swale, the project aims to make this a permanent pond with planting to improve biodiversity, reduce flood risk, and mitigate impacts of extreme weather caused by climate change.

This wetland will complement other ecological features, including wildflower meadows, woodland whips, and hedgerows, supporting rare plants like bee orchids, pyramidal orchids, and meadow saxifrage, along with diverse insects, invertebrates, and amphibians.

The initiative, taking place over 2–3 days in October-November 2026, will involve collaboration with idverde contractors, school groups, and local volunteers. Estate management will oversee communication and project management.

What we'll deliver

  • Line and plant a wetland of 30sqm
  • Seed an earth bank with wildflowers 30x3m
  • Organise and communicate 2-3 days contractor and community volunteers
