Poetry Jukebox

Words have power. We want a poetry jukebox in Belfast to affirm life and enrich our city with poetry as an alternative to words of hatred, sectarianism, racism, sexism and bigotry.

The environment

The environment

This Jukebox provides the availability of spoken word poems 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The accessible public space was chosen to ensure members of the public could access it easily and put literature where it belongs, everywhere and for everybody. There are twenty poems available, by 20 different poets. The oldest poet is 92 years old. One of our poets had a serious stroke many years ago, but we managed to include his words and get an emerging poet to read them. In addition to new poets, like Seanin Hughes and Glen Wilson, we had established poets like Eavan Poland, Paula Meehand, Joan Newmann, Eilean ni Chuilleanan, Michael Longley and National Poetry Competition winner Stephen Sexton.

The local economy

The local economy

The Jukebox is a lasting legacy for Belfast. In this way we have added value to the amenities of the arts centre and to the city as a whole. We contributed to the cultural economy of the city by adding something new; also, 20 poets were paid for their poems and recordings and we gave work to those involved in installing the jukebox, doing sound engineering, art design etc. We have added something gentle and beautiful to public discourse.

We have made contemporary poetry available on demand in an on street location. We have ensured equality of representation for women poets. We enhanced our work as freelance poets and opened opportunities for other poets, artists and techinicians.

The on-street installation is a permanent installation and a gift to the city of Belfast. We have demonstrated that the jukebox is a popular installation and that poetry is welcomed by the city. We have engaged with the city council to see if it might be possible to extend the scheme to other areas of the city over time. The Jukebox has its own twitter account @poetryjukebox and so a dialogue has opened up with the public about it.

The JukeBox is in public space and has many visitors of all ages. We have seen parents and children, older people, young people all engage with it.
