In July 2016 the Pepys Estate in Deptford will be 50 and we are organising a festival with Music, Film, Pictures, Games, Craft to celebrate our diversity and amazing heritage. Come and join us!
Co-oPepys is a community arts project and a charity that has been providing art activities for people living in its surrounding area for more than thirty years.
The objectives of the charity are to provide arts based education and training for the residents of Pepys estate and its immediate environs. As a community development organisation, Co-oPepys uses the arts as the means of engaging local people in processes which will:
• Support and enable their active participation in shaping the life of the neighbourhood
• Support and encourage them to recognise their own potential
• Provide opportunities and resources for people to develop skills, interests and confidence in themselves.
• Address the isolation and alienation experienced by many people living in the area
• Provide a space for people to explore issues and concerns that are relevant to them
• Make people feel positive about the area.
Co-oPepys aims to achieve these objectives by delivering a programme of arts and cultural activities such as theatre shows, music events, after schools clubs promoting poetry, arts, photography and music in the community.
In the 1990's Co-oPepys produced and published the Pepys Diary Magazine and distributed to all residents every two months. This free newsletter was created by residents to promote arts activities, events and discussions of social issues in the area.
More recently Co-oPepys has provided its Monday Art Club for more than 10 years. This has provided a time and space for local artists meet up; have a cup of tea, talking about art and relevant things and make art.
Co-oPepys aim to bring people together to encourage community participation, supporting people to recognise their own potential and enable them to shape their lives, also to feel positive about the local area by celebrating its cultural diversity.
