In July 2016 the Pepys Estate in Deptford will be 50 and we are organising a festival with Music, Film, Pictures, Games, Craft to celebrate our diversity and amazing heritage. Come and join us!
Did you know when the Pepys Estate was first opened in 1966 it was "dedicated to the peaceful enjoyment and well-being of Londoners"? It was called Pepys Estate in homage of visits of Samuel Pepys, a well-known English writer. He was famous for his Pepys Diaries. He wrote about 17th century events like the Great Fire of London and the plague. He was friends with John Evelyn, the writer and gardener who also lived in Deptford. To celebrate this rich history we're are organising a day of ENJOYMENT and a series of activities and events throughout the summer for 'Londoners' and Deptford locals. We want to encourage the community to come together and celebrate the history of the Pepys Estate and Deptford. The festival will be a fun day with games, arts and crafts, a Puppet show, the Pepys film, and a historical walk through the Estate, an art exhibition and more. There will also be a special screening of a film about the Pepys Estate and residents lives.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The Pepys Estate and the local area have a rich and diverse history. It is a vibrant neighbourhood which continues to change and adapt. We want the local community: new and old residents, businesses, community groups and all who know or don't know this area to learn more about its history and become active in its future. From a recent consultation by the Evelyn Community Revival we know the local community wants more activities and opportunities for people to come together. They want and have ideas for improving the local environment, cultural activities, events and activities for younger children (5-12yrs), improvement to the local facilities, and their health & well-being. The festival project will provide an opportunity for local residents of Pepys Estate and Deptford to reflect and document their past and present, and make positive and lasting impact their future and the changes that are happening around them.
Steps to get it done:
Please come and join us for a day of celebration and fun!
