Pebble Mill Forest garden plants
City GardenerIt's nice being out with like-minded people...being involved with a community thing that I get to enjoy with my little ones
More about our impact
The environment
We have added carbon sequestering species to this growing space and used wood mulch to lock more carbon into the soil here. We have made a huge increase to species diversity of plants on-site, increasing the numbers of flowering plants as well as the number of species.
Volunteering, jobs & education
We brought far more people together to volunteer on-site that we would have originally expected. Several groups joined us, including an inter-faith group, a religious group from India and a group of landscape architects. People regularly report to us that they are learning and passers-by hugely support the work.
Arts, culture & heritage
The forest garden at Pebble Mill Playing Fields is seen as an artistic endeavour by many of our supporters. The site also hosts one of 6 bird artworks that form a local walking trail.
Activity, health and leisure
Our volunteers come for connection and community but many of them work extremely hard. Sometimes we have difficult, lengthy projects to complete, e.g. the barrowing of large quantities of compost, and volunteers really put in some serious physical labour. Planting involves, bending, stretching and lifting and people often report feeling great after having taken part in this labour.
