Edlington Community Organisation (ECO) was formed by a broad section of community representatives and residents in 2000 who wanted to make a difference and create a voice for our community. Originally based in a porta cabin, we secured office space in the early 2000’s and later relocated to Yorkshire Main Community Centre in 2010 to serve our community in a more predominant location within Edlington, creating a central hub accessible to anyone, with a mission to improve and regenerate Edlington and its surrounding areas to make it a better place to live for all generations present and yet to come.
ECO is a charity and company limited by guarantee with a volunteer board of trustees. Our day to day operations are managed by Sam who has been part of the organisation for over 17 years and her dedication has been recognised with a Queen’s Honours Award, with an MBE for her services to the community. Sam is supported by a team of paid staff, an army of 70+ volunteers and referred to as the “Mother Ship”, ECO make’s people feel less “ALIENated”. Creating big impacts with little budgets:
• 7 day calendar including craft clubs, dancing, gymnastics, brownies, quiz clubs, exercise, jumble sales, martial arts, music clubs, playgroup and a community choir call “an aCHOIRed Taste”.
• Free breakfast and after school club, youth club and exclusion support.
• Befriending service, independent food bank, community cupboard and pay as you feel community market.
• Slipper Swaps, Winter Wellbeing, Fuel Poverty and Period Poverty projects.
• Annual events including teddy bear’s picnic, Edlo by the sea, Santa’s grotto and Edlington Christmas market, seasonal dinners, bus trips and charity fundraisers.
• Employment support, advice surgeries & signposting.
• Volunteer placements
ECO has achieved over 1 million pounds in funding and contracts to provide essential community services since its formation and has received 16 awards since 2014 including: A BBC Radio Sheffield Community Champion Award, 7 St Leger Tenants Choice Award, an Efficiency North Community Initative Award, A Doncaster Free Press Pride Award, Doncaster CVS Champion Awards and a Lions International Outstanding Support Award.
