Edlington Community Organisation hold a pay as you feel community market every Friday at Yorkshire Main Community Centre for residents to come along and grab essential food items for a small recommended donation.Food varies from week to week and contains a range of cupboard staples and fresh fruit & veg. In addition to our food we also have a range of other household essentials and a host of free items courtesy of The Hygiene Bank Doncaster, IKEA and our local supermarkets to help stretch the household budget and ease the pressure on struggling households whilst reducing food waste. Our community cafe is also open for lite bites and our table tops offer a variety of bargains for all ages. With support from Spacehive we can cover the overhead costs associated with our market such as venue hire, van running costs to intercept food and a contingency budget to purchase food in the event of a shortage from our suppliers.

What we'll deliver:

  • A community market held every Friday at Yorkshire Main Community Centre in Edlington
  • A reduction in food waste - filling bellies not bins
  • Increased volunteer opportunities

Why it's a great idea:

Our whole community will benefit from our project, particularly those who are vulnerable and down on their luck as a result of COVID-19. Everyone falls on hard times and needs a little bit of hope, so if you are visiting the market because of immediate food and essential needs, browsing our jumble sale or visiting our cafe we have something for everyone - especially a huge smile and welcoming arms into our community centre ! Working with Fareshare Yorkshire, IKEA, Morrisons and Tesco's we are reducing food waste and filling hungry bellies whilst bringing people together within the community. Our team is also on hand every Friday to signpost people to other support services and tell you about other community activities that you could get involved with.

Steps to get it done:

  • Covering the cost of venue hire and storage facilities to host our market
  • Covering the cost of van expenses to collect food and items for our market
  • Covering the cost of purchasing food from community partners who intercept this food on behalf of smaller charities
  • Contingency fund to buy food from other suppliers in the event of produce shortages

Edlington Community Organisation (ECO) is a small charity in heart of Edlington. With a small team of paid staff and an army of volunteers we work tiresly to regenerate Edlington and surrounding areas within Doncaster, providing services to improve the quality of life for all, by creating big impacts with littles budgets, with some of our projects a little quirky and alternative.
