To help make Barnet even better for those who live, work and study here.
By Cricklewood Railway Terraces Resident's Community Association
The Railway Terraces in Cricklewood is an urban oasis of about 180 near-identical cottage houses. We want to do our bit to make our homes cosier, cheaper to run and to reduce our carbon footprint.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
Our project will create an information pack and toolkit for the Railway Terraces, highlighting common vulnerabilities and suggesting options for insulation, heating and other improvements to help reduce costs and plan for a carbon-free and sustainable future . As there are 180 houses all with the same basic construction, there are many starting points in common. There are many routes to a net-zero terrace house. Nothing is a prescription, technologies will evolve and each home is used differently. However, the core structure of the terraces is very similar: about 90m2 of floor area, 2-3 bedrooms, small kitchens, red-brick cavity walls and simple pitched roofs. What works in one home is likely to work in another. We will work with a specialist company to survey typical houses and to help in writing a user-friendly guide which will aid residents in making informed decisions which could benefit themselves, the immediate community and also be a template for similar initiatives elsewhere.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The Terraces were built as a railway village and they remain an unusually strong community, where everyone knows everyone else. In part a legacy of its origins as an employer-owned neighbourhood, which endured for more than a century, this also stems from the layout of small cottages in back-to- back and front-to-front terraces, with gardens between the fronts and single-track access roads at the back. There are many communities in London with groups of common dwelling types. This proposal offers a significant opportunity, with the backing of a residents association, to provide informed advice for the benefit of the Railway Terraces and as model guidance that others may adopt.
