The Nelson Mandela Community Programme is a community-led organisation, based in Leicester, made up of active and knowledgeable people, from a variety of backgrounds, well-known and respected on the local cultural scene. We set ourselvs up to foster and promote awarness of Nelson Mandela's message and example of peace-building, keeping alive his message of peace and reconciliation. Nelson Mandela could be described as 'every man or every woman' who wishes to see the world we live in progress away from tyranny into a "democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunites". This is a vision of a progressive future civilization we have for all. Nelson Mandela described South Africa as a "rainbow nation". We believe that here in Leicester, we have a "rainbow city" with a mixture of people from all racial, cultural, multi-faith, gender orientation and other backgrounds. We believe that the examples from the legacy of Nelson Mandela will serve and protect the interest of the generations to come and our planet. The Nelson Mandela statue will visually serve and be promoted in Leicester as a symbol of peaceful co-existence for the present and future generations.
This project to have a statue of Nelson Mandela in Leicester is our first major enterprise but it won't be our last!
