The idea
Did you know the name 'Croydon' originates from the Anglo Saxon phrase 'Croh Denu', meaning 'crocus valley'.
Nazz Saffron's main aims are not only to grow an abundance of saffron for the Cronx, but to provide a funding 'pot' (funds obtained from saffron sales) for local groups/charities, and young initiatives.
What we'll deliver
- Lots and lots of saffron!
- A funding 'pot' for local non-profit groups to bid for
- A place for Croydonites to mingle and learn new skills
Why it's a great idea
The project aims to consolidate the following values:
Value 1: Building skills for local people - NS will provide provisions for volunteers to learn the basics of good gardening practice.
Value 2: Celebrating local heritage - Not many Croydonites realise the plethora of history Croydon has to offer; especially with its Roman ties to growing Saffron. This project will inform and educate.
Steps to get it done
- Complete set up of perimeter hoarding using donated/brought wooden pallets
- Buy raw materials needed
- Open to volunteers to start planting
- Reach out to local resturants/cutomers for pre-orders
- Harvest
- Sell the harvest to consolidate 'funding pot'
- Begin competition for 'funding pot'
The main costs are constructing the perimeter hoarding, the crocus bulbs and soil.
A compost heap will allow waste food to be recycled for use as compost.
