More about our impact

More about our impact

The local economy

The local economy

The project celebrates the unique heritage of Mumbles, attracting new visitors to the area, increasing footfall to the village of Mumbles itself, boosting the local economy, particularly restaurants and cafes and the many shops in the village, as well as holiday properties.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteers helped to deliver the project in many different ways, including carrying out historical research and finding archive visual material for inclusion in the QR videos, arranging for local individuals to take part in recordings of personal memories of the Mumbles Railway, participating in video and drone shoots for the QR codes content, assisting with audio recording sessions, leading guided walks. All the volunteers reported having a greater awareness of local history and heritage after taking part in the project, as well as benefiting from doing new activities and working alongside other volunteers.

Arts, culture & heritage

Arts, culture & heritage

The benefits the project will bring include: 1. recording and celebrating this major and much-loved element of the heritage of Mumbles and Swansea, and of the industrial, maritime and transport history of Wales, thus ensuring that this heritage will be in a better condition and available for future generations; 2. dissemination of local history to both the community and visitors to the area, thus ensuring that heritage will be identified and better explained; 3. provision of a guided walking trail to encourage physical activity, which in turn enhances both physical and mental well-being; 4. encouraging new visitors to the Mumbles and Swansea areas thus bringing financial benefits to those communities.

Activity, health and leisure

Activity, health and leisure

The Mumbles Railway Trail will promote activity and both physical and mental well-being , since following a pre-planned walk route such as a heritage walking trail provides the motivation for people to complete a walk of a certain distance, with points of interest along the way at stopping points to punctuate the walk. Walking for leisure is also a good opportunity to strengthen bonds and nourish relationships, and can encourage a sense of mutual achievement when done in groups.
