This service/program is for 14-25 year olds who struggle with their mental health and learning differences, in particular those with neurodiversity. We will use the medium of digital music and radio to engage them and build relationships. During this process, we will improve their technical, academic (Arts Award) & soft skills. We will teach, mixing, making tunes, producing a radio show, writing lyrics and any other music related skill that the young person wishes to develop. This will therefore increase their opportunity to further education, employment, integration into the community and independence. The service/program has been devised to fill the gaps in adolescent services. No other service has an open-ended program or such an appealing medium, which includes the current music trends. This program will be facilitated and delivered by team members that have the expertise in both technical and soft skills.
What we'll deliver:
- Young peoples improved confidence and self esteem
- Young people learning lifeskills and having opportunites through transferable skills
- Opportunity to gain an Arts Award Explore Certificate through Trinity College
- Mentoring support for those that need it, throughout the programme and as long as needed
- Reports for parents
- Partnership with referrers
Why it's a great idea:
Through attending the Mindwaves program, young people build their confidence and as we discover their other interests, we can signpost them to other activities or they can become part of the Citizen Kane project. We offer an informal referral system, user friendly environment, engaging medium (music), a tailored program, no waitlist (we can usually accommodate within 2 weeks), open ended programme,1-2-1 working, and a relaxing & safe environment. We also encourage friendships with other young people where appropriate. We can assist them in finding other interests and work on how you build relationships. Due to our open-ended program, we are in a good position to build up relationships and give continuity to young people. Due to our exciting medium of music & radio, we are appealing and have commonalities due to the genres of music.
Steps to get it done:
- work with at least 20 young people successfully 25% will probably come from Guildford borough
- Help at least 6 young people gain an Arts Award
- Move at least 6 young people onto further education
- Assist at least 6 young people into employment
- Prevent at least 3 young people from suicide or self harm
- Help reduce all the young people worked with to reduce anxiety
- Help build the confidence of all the young people worked with
- Help reduce substance misuse from some
- Assist some young people from dropping out of education
- Assist some young people to stay in education
Please see testimonials and promotional videos made by the young people themselves.
We'd also like to add that we've recently been nominated for the Guildford Mayors Access Award for service to young people with disabilities and the wider community. This will be awarded on the 15th of October.
