Thanet's 1st Baby Bank for Mamas in Need published their Delivery Report!2 years ago

Help us tackle poverty and waste by launching Mama to Mama - the first preloved baby clothing bank in Thanet. Building a community of mamas supporting mamas, spreading hope and boosting wellbeing.
Our vision is that every mama has the hope, confidence and the essentials she needs to provide for her baby in its first 6 months. Mama to Mama was set up by two Margate Mamas in response to a clear need in our community which has only been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Too many women around us are living in poverty, fleeing domestic abuse or leaving the care system, and struggling to afford the essentials they need for themselves and their new babies. At the same time, we know that an astonishing 183 million items of outgrown baby clothing are stashed in UK homes, and 1/3 of parents have said they've thrown clothing in the bin, not knowing what else to do with it. Mama to Mama will take preloved baby clothes and essentials, and edit them into beautiful collections for gifting to vulnerable expectant mamas in Thanet. Spreading hope while reducing landfill waste. With your help we can build a service that will be embedded in our community for years to come.

Why it's a great idea:
Thanet contains some of the most deprived communities in the country, where the circumstances of many families have been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The mamas that we will be supporting are referred to us through social care, and are unable to afford the essentials that they need for themselves and their babies. We hope that our boxes will relieve some of the financial and emotional stresses, and provide a boost to the mamas' self-worth and wellbeing, enabling them to focus on being mums, and enjoying their new babies. Taking donations of preloved baby clothing and essentials, we are giving these items a new life and, crucially, diverting them from landfill. This is a project led by mamas for mamas, and we will provide volunteering opportunities, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation after what has been a difficult year for new mothers in particular, and contributing to social cohesion.

We did it!!! Thank you SO much to each and every one of your for pledging to our crowdfunder and enabling us to continue this project into the future! 228 people backed this campaign, and every single pledge has made a difference. We can now get working on properly setting up Thanet's first baby bank for vulnerable families. We've got a lot of exciting work to do... including securing a project space, professionalising our set-up and continuing to get our baby boxes out to families in need. But we also need to get your rewards out to you, and draw our raffle winners! Spacehive will be collecting your pledges over the next few days, and as soon as that's done, we'll be in touch about how to redeem your vouchers and rewards, and to let the lucky raffle winners choose their amazing prizes! We can't quite believe it, but we've just hit our target! Thank you SO much to every single one of you who has pledged, liked, commented and shared our crowdfunder and social media posts. We couldn't have done this without you and every bit of support means so much. This is a huge milestone for us and means that we can set up this project professionally and embed it into our community. But this isn't the end! We still have 5 days to go and, put simply, the more money we raise, the more vulnerable women we can support. We have big ideas for developing this service beyond Thanet. We want to create a DIY Baby Box Kit so that any parent, anywhere, can provide vital support to another parent in need. If you like the sound of this, please keep pledging and sharing!

Founded by Margate Mamas Jayne and Jess, and powered by a collective of local volunteers, we wash, package and distribute beautiful boxes of preloved baby clothes and essentials through referrals from social care and community workers.
The mamas who receive our boxes are experiencing one or more of the following challenges:
We curate each box individually to ensure there is a coherent collection for a new baby's wardrobe. Each box contains at least:
