The Urban Partnership Group want to install 64 solar panels to the roof of the Masbro Community Centre, to generate its own electricity and use the funds saved for much needed community projects.
The Masbro Centre is a vibrant community centre with over a 1000 visitors each week. In 2018, we began to explore the feasibility of generating our own electricity. After lots of advice & support and from partners, we have now received planning permission to have 64 solar panels installed. As an integral part of the Hammersmith & Fulham Community we are not only committed to reducing our carbon footprint but also to continue to deliver a diverse range of services to improve the health, wealth and wellbeing of our community. The money saved by generating our own power this way will be used on community projects that meet the emerging needs of the community we serve. We would launch our new panels with a 'Community Clear Up' day. This would be run in conjunction with the Elders Tea Club, The Community Champions, The Masbro Youth Club and The Children's Centre. We would also invite local schools to take part and host an 'eco tips' pop up information tent on to help spread the word!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
We are a charity and every penny counts, therefore money saved will go towards much needed community projects and help with the upkeep of the 'jewel' that is the Masbro Community Centre. We offer a range of services (over 100 activities each week) for the people of Hammersmith and Fulham including a children's centre, a youth club, parenting support, outreach for families, employment advice and training, pottery and art classes and an Elders Tea club as well as a range of fitness and leisure activities available to all. Not only will we be saving money in the long term, along with other green initiatives we have adopted, we want to play our part in tackling the climate change emergency. The Masbro Centre wants to help in protecting the planet as well as to continue to serve the people of Hammersmith and Fulham especially those who suffer from inequality, social exclusion or come from disadvantaged groups.
Steps to get it done:
Through a holistic programme of activities the Urban Partnership Groups aims to: 1. Enhance and promote the health, wealth and well-being of people in the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and surrounding areas. 2. Reduce inequalities and remove discrimination and other causes of social exclusion in disadvantaged groups and communities in order to ensure that Hammersmith & Fulham is a place where everyone has the opportunity to live healthily and prosperously, in tolerant, caring communities. 3. Rebuild communities and improve opportunities for disadvantaged people to participate in work and other aspects of community life. 4. Continually improve the delivery of services and implement innovative solutions to meet changing local needs and community aspirations. Key services include: - Older peoples services - The Masbro Youth Club - Parenting support - Training and employment support - Community & Maternity Champions projects - Nursery's & Children Centre

Transforming local communities and environments
Following on from the success of the project you supported - Make the Masbro Run in Sunshine project in 2019/2020 - we are planning to replicate the success at Edward Woods Community Centre. To date, at Masbro, we have saved approximately £8k in electricity bills and generated over 20,000 KwH. YOU made that happen. The Edward Woods Community Centre, based in the heart of Hammersmith & Fulham, is aiming to install 92 solar panels on the roof of the centre to generate its own renewable electricity, and use money saved to support much needed community projects. Based in an area of social deprivation, the centre enables residents to take part in any number of low or no cost activities including; health and exercise classes, a children’s centre, adult education, and parenting support. Currently we also provide emergency food distribution to over 200 households on the estate and surrounding area. To pledge or simply to find out more about the benefits of the project please click here: https://www.spacehive.com/ewccsunshine UPG have already raised £53,500 of the £79,500, and the fundraising campaign continues until 30th June 2021. Firstly I do hope you and your families are keeping well. We had big plans to invite you to a formal launch of the Masbro Centre Solar Panels on Monday 30th March, where we had planned a wonderful celebration for all our supporters to make a very public THANK YOU – but then the world changed and all our plans went on hold. However, as you know the sun kept on shining and the solar panels kept working. We have recently had a monitoring system installed so we can see the progress we are making. I’m delighted to share with you at the time of writing through our production of green energy we have: • Prevented 3551.60 kg of Carbon Emissions – the same as a 23,677 km car journey • Which is the equivalent of planting 91 trees. At the Masbro Centre, during this time we have continued to support individuals and families remotely, making over 700 ‘connect and care’ calls a week. In addition, we provide food to over 100 families in need from the Masbro and another 400 families from our White City and Edward Woods Community Centres – that’s over 7000 food packages since the pandemic started. We are hoping to return to something near ‘normal’ in September and the money that we no longer spend on electricity bills will go towards supporting the community that now need our help more than ever - you are part of making that happen. We can’t thank you enough and we will get together at some point in the future to celebrate this community success.
Whoop, 180 people have pledged since fundraising began!
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
