The idea
Little Acorns, Mighty Oaks is all about lifelong learning.
Little Acorns will feature fun sessions for preschoolers and primary age children. Carers who come to our sessions with their children tell us they “came away feeling I’d connected with my child and that they’d learnt something” and “it's been the best child activity sessions I've done. Informative engaging creative, just brilliant...” Sessions are run by an experienced educator who specialises in nature-focused learning for young children. Using story, song, crafts and games, she encourages children and their adults to explore how humans connect with the wider world.
Mighty Oaks will offer sessions at Creative Shed, a project with the power to change lives. Workshops take place in a multipurpose facility in Cashes Green. People work together on practical activities to care for nature. People learn new skills and work together, giving input about what they’d like to do, learning from their mistakes, and growing in confidence.
What we'll deliver
- 22 Little Acorns sessions
- 50 Mighty Oaks sessions
Why it's a great idea
Little Acorns, Mighty Oaks takes a long-term, joined-up approach to connecting local people to nature. By encouraging young children to feel like part of the wider world, Little Acorns lays the foundation for a lifetime of care for nature. Children in our area will learn to see the importance of caring for the natural environment and are more likely to engage in activity to protect local biodiversity; research shows that young children who engage with nature are more likely to take action to protect it later. By supporting people with different needs and with different abilities to take part in collaborative activity, Mighty Oaks will support people to understand the whole food cycle, through enabling volunteers to sow, tend and harvest their own food. Through creating homes for wildlife within a supportive welcoming team, they understand the value of working in harmony with the natural environment and play an active part in the local economy, as items are sold in the SVP eco shop.
