The Latest from Love Burnt Oak Community Kitchen
Thanks to your generous support, the Love Burnt Oak Community Kitchen is now a reality and has become a vital hub in the borough of Barnet. The funding enabled us to complete Phase One of an ongoing project allowing us to refurbish a dormant space in the community which now houses the Community Kitchen, the Pop-Up Supermarket, the Community Café and shortly the Community Training Academy.
The Phase One goal was to run a one-day a week operation in addition to rescuing and redistribution one metric tonne of food per week we are currently serving up to 50 people a day a hot meal and providing a safe space in which people can connect and build much needed relationships. We have many testimonies of people for whom the food and the companionship have been truly life saving what’s been very exciting to us is that not only have the users benefited but equally important so have those who have volunteered.
One of our Chefs tells of how the project has literally helped him re discover his life purpose.
Our goal now is to consolidate the one day a week service and increase it to two to three days.
In Phase Two
Our Cafe will eventually operate on a 5 day per week basis serving meals and snacks throughout the day. The Community Food Market will continue to operate and will be spread over more than just the current one day. The Community Training Academy will offer a range of free courses throughout the year, with a mix of both accredited and non-accredited courses supported by Barnet Southgate College, we will also run community workshops to raise awareness on a range of healthy eating classes in line with Barnet Public Health and The Mayors pledge to promote healthy eating.
Barnet Council have shown their support with this project and have made available to the public several commissioned reports that support the need for our services, ranging from child poverty to child obesity, lack of skills for the unemployed sector in this locality and the most vulnerable who are unable to access food at affordable or even no price.
Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely express our gratitude to every one of you who have believed in us from the start.
