By Certain Curtain Theatre Company
A unique awareness raising and educational theatre, BSL film and audio project exploring domestic abuse and it's impact on women, girls and Society.
Using Lady In Red, a highly successful theatre production, we’ll create immersive and accessible versions of the play, to widen community engagement and disability access. We will launch the project with a tour of live performances across Lancashire, in Preston, Burnley, Wyre, West Lancashire and Chorley - followed by digital community screenings open to all residents of Lancashire. Creating - a live theatre performance - an immersive film with BSL interpretation - interactive activities - an 'audio' performance for people with sight loss and blindness. Breaking down barriers to engagement with these issues by using the arts and accessible mediums. Linking people with local support.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
1 in 3 women will experience domestic abuse but often experiences 50 incidents of abuse before getting effective help. Women with disabilities are twice as likely to experience domestic violence than non-disabled women. There are still attitudes of blaming victims of domestic violence in our society and this affects how victims are treated by friends, family and agencies when they do disclose. We can increase awareness and understanding – not by talking statistics or with lengthy speeches but by engaging audiences directly in a dynamic and engaging drama which plays out these issues. They 'experience' a victim/survivor's story first hand. Bringing professional theatre into community settings increases access to the arts and education. LADY IN RED – a lyrical, dynamic piece of theatre that takes the audience on a journey with one woman as she attempts to leave an abusive relationship; accompanied by an empowering, educational workshop with the writers and actors & access to support
Steps to get it done:
Lady In Red helps the audience to finally answer the age old question 'Why doesn't she just leave?' Which remains the main obstacle to many people fully understanding the true nature of domestic violence. The after show discussion enables audiences to further explore the issues, their personal relevance and how best to seek help, support a friend and recognise abusive behaviour.Certain Curtain Theatre company has been at the forefront of domestic violence drama since 1995 and has written, produced and performed in community settings since 1989. They have the domestic violence knowledge, experience and passion to deal sensitively with these issues – and have the award-winning writing and performing skills to create a compelling drama that real people can identify with.Outcomes include: Increased awareness & understanding of domestic abuse and the tactics used by abusers to maintain power & control within the relationship.Increased knowledge of how best to support victims/survivors
