Lache Larder - affordable food & warmth

We are a resident-run social supermarket in Lache and we want to ensure that throughout the cost-of-living crisis we can continue to divert food from landfill and use it to feed bellies not bins!

The environment

The environment

over the years we have saved an enormous amount of food products from landfill, reducing food wastage. we have achieved this by diverting this food and offering it to the local community, aiming to alleviate food poverty at the same time. Our Solar panels funded via our space hive allows us to be even kinder to the environment by lowering our reliance on traditional energy sources and allowing us to harness the suns energy (renewable) to keep our operation running. As you can imagine, with the large amount of food we store and distribute, energy costs were through the roof, especially around the time we were bidding as costs had soared after the pandemic. We have been able to focus more on community programmes since the panels were fitted.

The local economy

The local economy

Not really applicable but we are one of the few shops to continually operate in our area and provide a resource for many. the best part is any money that is spent with us goes back into the community via projects, activities, days out - thus leaving many struggling families with more disposable income to inject back into the local economy.

Volunteering, jobs & education

Volunteering, jobs & education

The Larder continues to attract local people who want to volunteer and expand their CVs and gain opportunities for paid employment, alongside older people who like to have something to keep occupied. Our older volunteers report that they would often feel socially isolated without the organisation.

Activity, health and leisure

It helps many families and individuals receive quality nutrition, with a particular focus on fresh fruit and veg, something that is often reported by our waste warrior as something they find expensive to get enough of in their families diet. we also have growing spaces and have held multiple 'grow from waste' classes.
